We’ve won outstanding Pet Rehabilitation Centre of the Year 2024, thank you to the Business Awards UK!For those of you who are unfamiliar with the work we do, here is an introduction to The Renew Centre…
We are The Renew Centre, an dedicated veterinary referral centre, honing in on the diagnosis and management of pain, lameness and poor performance in dogs.
The directors – co owned and a 50/50 team are Dr Rachel Mowbray Richardson (Veterinary Surgeon) MRCVS CCRP and Dr Emma Fretwell (Chiropractor) DC FRCC CCRP, and together they have realised their dreams of setting up and running a centre of excellence, championing all dogs.
Both Emma and Rachel have had a big role in the Team GB agility teams over the years, Emma being Team Chiropractor from 2009-2015, and Rachel as Team Vet from 2007 onwards, and also represented her country as a competitor with her little border terrier Nutmeg. They have both worked together for 17 years, and eventually joined forces to set up this independent veterinary referral practice in 2022, recognising the need for a specialist centre, putting dogs at the heart of the matter.
As a team we have a vast experience, ranging from physiotherapy and canine rehabilitation, to diagnostic imaging, and use of orthotics. There is a vast range of services that we can offer: MRI, CT, X-rays, Ultrasound, Pain Trace, then the treatments from the new and innovative Stem Cell Therapy and PRP, Joint injections, Chiropractic, Acupuncture, Hydrotherapy, Physiotherapy, Shockwave, Laser, Massage and Taping. We offer other services like creating and fitting Orthotics for the dogs, as well as medication (under prescription), and other visiting specialists such as a cardiologist and animal behaviourist.
RENEW is an acronym for the core ethos of our mission: Regeneration Education Novel therapies Enhancement Winners. Regeneration is represented two fold – regenerative therapies such as Stem Cell Therapies and PRP, as well as returning to sport after injury – being grown again! Education has many different meanings throughout our business – growth and development of our team, continuous education of our clients about how to help their animals, and we are developing an educational arm to the business to help other canine professionals deal with sports injuries, benefiting from our experience in this aspect. We also have a thirst for knowledge, and continuously strive to educate ourselves as directors, to be able to lead the team and provide the most up to date information and services to our clients and their dogs. The next, Novel therapies, covers our determination to embrace new and innovative technology, and bring this to help with diagnosis and treatment for our patients. Enhancement – again for all aspects: team, management, therapies, healing, clients, dogs and eventual results – many of our patients are sports dogs, and many owners / clients wish to return to the sport they all love with their dogs, to progress further in the ranks of their chosen sport. All leading to the eventual Winners – both actual and metaphorical. We have many of the Team GB dogs for all aspects of dog sports as patients, and these all compete and perform on the international stage, World Champions in their ranks, as well as those who are ecstatic with getting back to smaller competition with a happy and healthy dog by their side.
Dr Mowbray Richardson has a drive and purpose, a relentless pursuit of novel ideas for the recognition of pain in dogs, and the treatment modalities that will help each individual. One of the first to embrace the regenerative therapies, she has a catalogue of cases proving the efficacy of the Stem Cells and PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) treatments, including novel applications of these. Stumbling across a fabulous innovative product called Pain Trace, this works to ascertain the pain and anxiety responses of a dog when you move a certain joint or apply pressure to particular areas, by monitoring the brain waves, and recording any fluctuations. As this can be performed whilst the dog is sedated, it is revolutionary in the diagnosis and treatment of these cases that we are unable to handle or approach properly. We are the first in this country to adopt this in general practice, and the benefits are astounding, far more wide reaching than initially portrayed. These are just a few of the examples that Dr Mowbray Richardson has introduced for the benefit of our patients.
Dr Mowbray Richardson is an advocate for education, speaking at various conferences and teaching programs, she brings technical and often complicated topics to the public, explaining in a way that everyone can understand, a true gift.
Dr Emma Fretwell: author, educator, and Chiropractor, strives for the exchange of knowledge, be it with marketing, promotional materials, shows and exhibitions, keeping the clients at the forefront of the knowledge revolution. Her visionary leadership and business management style, have seen this business start from scratch, set processes and plans, holding accountability throughout, ensuring client satisfaction is at the forefront of our actions. As well as the treatment aspect of Chiropractic for the dogs, creating treatment plans and programs, understanding and promoting the rehabilitation and exercise prescription elements to the treatment plans for the dogs. Plus team management and HR, overseeing the day to day operational elements of managing a business this size , and having time and space for the blue sky thinking that is required to keep pushing this business forward. By encouraging open communication, The Renew Centre cultivates an environment where creativity and innovation are nurtured, and unconventional ideas are celebrated.
Beyond her achievements with The Renew Centre, Dr Fretwell is an industry leader in her own right. An author of “Dogs in Detail” and a sought after speaker at industry conferences and events, an inspirational teacher and educator within the Animal Chiropractic world, she shares her insights and innovations within the allied veterinary health professionals . She has also spoken at the House of Lords on these matters, and across the globe. Nurturing the next generation of vets and allied professionals coming through, Dr Fretwell has recently been speaking at the Association of Veterinary Students at Nottingham University.
Referrals are at the centre of our business, we like to keep communication lines open from referring vets, allied professionals associated with each patient, clients and trainers (all according to GDPR regulations), therefore fostering great collaborative relationships for the sake of the dog. We actively welcome observation days from vets, allied professionals and students.
We pride ourselves on our customer reviews and feedback: Google reviews are at 5*, Facebook reviews are rated at 5.0, and our own in house satisfaction monitors for the last month is at 98% excellent and 2 % good (please see the uploads for examples). We have recently changed PMS and the in house satisfaction monitors have only started since October!
Both Dr Mowbray Richardson and Dr Fretwell have a deep knowledge of canine rehabilitation, both gaining their CCRP (Canine Rehabilitation Certificate) with the University of Tennessee. This has been the cornerstone of the business in the initial developments, and was the first major investment in their business, the underwater treadmill. We have a rehabilitation and hydrotherapy team of five, lead by a highly qualified RVN and Hydrotherapist, and have some phenomenal results, as well as some outstanding cases where the whole team has had input, the power of the collective mind. Recognising that rehabilitation is not just water therapy, each of our therapists and vets across the board have a great understanding of the power of exercise prescription, and aim to restore the dog back to a functional state post injury, post surgery and as part of a fitness and return to sport plan.
In summary, The Renew Centre’s unique approach to pain management, under the guidance of Dr Mowbray Richardson and Dr Fretwell, is unprecedented and remarkable. The unwavering approach and commitment to fostering a culture of innovation and customer service, make this business a prime candidate for the awards: Outstanding Pet Rehabilitation Centre, Outstanding Vet Practice, and Exception Customer Satisfaction. This model has immense potential for positive change for the health and welfare of all dogs in the future.
