sports dogs

treating pain and poor performance

The Renew Centre aims to fulfil the huge need out there for attention to detail for our sports dogs: diagnosis, treatment plans, and rehabilitation back to the sport that both dog and owner adore. Within this unique facility, we have assembled a fabulous team around us, honing in on all the aspects of the return to sport process, and are very proud of our achievements to date.

We offer 2 areas of work with sports dogs – pain management and poor performance investigations, as well as fitness, rehabilitation and return to sport programs.

pain and poor performance

Firstly we need to know the reasons for the pain that your dogs are experiencing, and the issues behind the poor performance in their sport.

This takes the form of diagnostic investigations such as MRI, ultrasound, physical examination and discussion.

Treatment options

Then depending on the diagnosis, there are many pathways and treatment options we could offer:

Many of these can be run together and a specific plan will be put in place for your dog – every dog is different, they heal at different rates, and the nature of the injury is different, hence the guideline above will be much more tailored to suit you and your dog.

Fitness plans

As we ask so much of our competing dogs, a sport specific fitness plan, is a great idea to create a targeted approach to the sport that you both love. This takes into account the starting fitness levels, the level of competition you work at, your aims and targets for the season, as well as the access you have to different equipment, surfaces, terrain etc. Please get in touch if this is something you would like us to look at with you.

Rehabilitation

Rehabilitation is the process to gain strength, co-ordination and movement in the dogs, and to facilitate a return to ‘normal’. Every dog has a different level of normal, every owner has a different expectation of normal, and the skill is to focus on supporting the animal to recover and gain their lifestyle back after injury, illness or surgery, enabling them to live a full, and comfortable life.

Research shows that early rehabilitation improves mobility, return to function, and quality of life following surgery. The impact of rehabilitation has been extensively researched and shown to help greatly in many orthopaedic and neurological conditions such as, but not limited to:

Cruciate Ligament disease / surgery

Hip or elbow dysplasia

INTERVERTERBRAL DISC DISEASE

ARTHRITIS

POST OPERATIVE ISSUES
